Abstract
This presentation explores the role of artificial intelligence in teaching and learning, with a focus on how educators can support meaningful, responsible, and human-centered uses of AI in the classroom. It considers the knowledge, practices, and processes that remain important for student learning as generative AI becomes increasingly available and examines how AI can be incorporated without replacing inquiry, independent thinking, writing, and reflection. Drawing on student perspectives, the presentation addresses potential uses of AI for clarification, accessibility, feedback, and revision, alongside concerns related to overreliance, misinformation, and academic integrity. It also presents strategies for responsible AI use before, during, and after engagement with AI tools, emphasizing learning goals, evaluation of AI-generated information, transparency, and reflection. The presentation further situates classroom AI use within broader educational and societal contexts, including questions of access, privacy, safety, policy, and preparation for college, work, and life beyond the classroom.
