Abstract
This brief was written by researchers from two self-advocacy organizations, Massachusetts Advocates Standing Strong and Self-Advocacy Association of New York State, to educate parents and supporters of youth in transition about guardianship and alternatives to guardianship. The brief explores themes found in literature for youth with IDD on transfer of rights. These themes include reasons people pursue guardianship and its negative effects on people with IDD and strategies and recommendations about alternatives to guardianship.
