Abstract

Asian American adults experience an increased risk of type 2 diabetes at lower body mass index (BMI) levels than the general population, yet evidence-based screening recommendations are not consistently implemented. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) recommends diabetes screening for Asian American adults at a BMI threshold of ≥23 kg/m²; however, a variety of barriers contribute to missed screening opportunities. Evidence supports the use of EMR-based clinical decision support to improve adherence to preventive screening recommendations. A Best Practice Alert (BPA) is recommended to identify eligible Asian American adults with a BMI ≥23 kg/m² and prompt primary care providers to consider diabetes screening. Increasing screening according to guidelines may facilitate earlier diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diabetes-related complications.
