Abstract

The objective of this capstone project is to address the current disparity in cancer incidence rates in Hispanic people in Worcester County, Massachusetts. This population was the only ethnicity group in Worcester County to see a significant rise in cancer incidence rates between 2017 and 2021 (NCI, 2026).  Worcester County was the only county in the state of Massachusetts to have a significant rise in cancer incidence rates in Hispanic people between 2017 and 2021 (NCI, 2026). The PRISMA literature review tool was used to evaluate the existing evidence regarding interventions addressing disparities in cancer incidence in Hispanic vs. non-Hispanic populations. The specific population for this capstone is Hispanic women due for routine mammogram screening. The PubMed database was used to identify the current literature on this topic. 10 articles were selected for review based on relevance, full text accessibility, and English language translation availability. The findings of this review indicated that in this population a bilingual English/Spanish education intervention discussing basic breast cancer screening and breast cancer biology could be utilized to increase awareness of breast cancer screening. This could in turn increase compliance with routine breast cancer screening. Additionally, patient navigators can be utilized to help women navigate the health care system and set up screening tests, further increasing screening rates. These concepts could be implemented in Worcester County with the assistance of community-based organizations such as churches and cancer centers to increase breast cancer screening rates with the intention of addressing the overall disparity in cancer incidence rates.
