Abstract
What We Want to Remember tells the story of Eduardo Ramírez, a Guatemalan immigrant who moved to Texas in the 1970s and later to Massachusetts with his wife, also Guatemalan, and their three young children. Over time, he grows tortured by his despair with the American Dream and faces unusual challenges as he seeks to return to his homeland. Yet his free-spirited wife Linda has embraced the way of life in America, and because of her own haunting childhood in Guatemala, has no interest in returning. The novel is narrated by both Eduardo and Linda and begins on the day Eduardo leaves Guatemala for the United States.
