Abstract
This video presentation features an honors thesis originally presented at the Massachusetts Undergraduate Research Conference in April 2022. The thesis analyzes how Latin American cultural values and popular media reinforce gender norms, such as machismo and marianismo, and how these norms contribute to the region’s elevated rates of femicide. Through cultural and comparative analysis, the project highlights the systemic, political, and societal factors that enable gender-based violence to persist.
