The Confucius Institute at the University of Massachusetts Boston hosted an intensive, three-day Chinese Teacher Training Conference for 151 guest teachers from 20 states, November 1-3, 2014. The Conference was supported by Hanban, the headquarters of the Confucius Institute in Beijing, to provide professional development for guest Chinese teachers in the U.S. Guest teachers are helping to address the shortage of qualified Chinese teachers in the U.S. for meeting the growing demand to learn Mandarin.

There are 500 guest Chinese teachers in the U.S. who are selected by Hanban through a highly competitive application process. Hanban’s goal is to increase the number of guest Chinese teachers to 20,000 by 2020. Based on the success of the November 2013 conference and our expertise in Chinese Speech Contests, Hanban is considering naming UMass Boston’s Confucius Institute to be one of the primary training centers in the U.S. The Confucius Institute at UMass Boston recruited 11 highly experienced Chinese specialists to teach the 151 guest teachers best practices in teaching Chinese at the elementary, middle school and high school levels.

The conference was held at the Corcoran Jenison conference space leased by the UMass Boston College of Advancing and Professional Studies. In attendance were: Jianjun Cen, Head Counselor of Education Office, Consulate General of the People's Republic of China in New York; Lisa Huang, Program Director at College Board; Xubo Shao, Director of Volunteer Program Center at Hanban; Winston Langley, Provost of UMass Boston; Zongguo Xia, Vice Provost of UMass Boston; Chengyun Liu, Chinese Director of Confucius Institute at UMass Boston; Baifeng Sun, Associate Director of Confucius Institute at UMass Boston.
