Abstract
This unconventional synthesis project uses the frameworks of communication studies and critical theory to explore questions of subjectification and identity. This paper uses a research-based approach to discussing my original piece of art known as autofiction. Simultaneously, this paper tries to use the techniques of art to communicate its meanings to you. I have chosen this style of writing for my research paper precisely because my research (and creative work) deals with narrative, identity, and ideas which cannot be said in words; ideas which have been made impossible to communicate through the official, traditional channels. To that end, in order to express ideas which can’t be broached directly, which must instead be approached askance, my paper will employ techniques of artistic and poetic communication outside of certain norms for traditional research papers and may then necessarily feel a little strange, loose, “untidy”, or “unfocused”. With the expectation that a reader can approach this work as a piece of art (as I hope you might), my work will still surprise you and ask you to think in new ways which might be unfamiliar or unwonted. There is so much to be learned when we are surprised and when we play. For my purposes here, the choices I have made in the creation of this paper are the only way that these thoughts can be shared.
