The Department of Urban Planning and Community Development at UMass Boston prepares the next generation of urban planners and community development professionals to build healthy, vibrant, resilient, and just communities. Housed within the School for the Environment, the department conducts interdisciplinary research to understand and address the root causes of inequitable and unsustainable urban development. Through partnerships with communities, governments, nonprofit organizations, and industry, our faculty advance innovative solutions that support equitable, inclusive, and resilient futures. This page showcases the breadth of our faculty's research, community-engaged scholarship, applied planning projects, consulting activities, and student collaborative work. We welcome opportunities to collaborate with public agencies, community organizations, nonprofit partners, and private-sector organizations on research, planning, policy, and community development initiatives.
