Description of the Problem: Traditional alphanumeric paging has correlated to frequent interruptions in patient care, poor communication flow, decreased provider satisfaction and puts patient safety at risk.

Available Knowledge: A Prisma guided systematic literature review was completed to consider the available effective alternatives to alphanumeric paging.

Aim and Objectives: The aim of this quality improvement project was to utilize a text messaging system for providers to streamline communication flow between nursing and providers within the hospital setting. During the 3-week project implementation period, the goals were to increase the number of text pages in comparison to alphanumeric pages, reduce the number of provider call backs from pages and capture an increase nursing and ancillary staff satisfaction with the communication flow measured by satisfaction survey scores.

Intervention: Implementation of a communication pathway that engaged the user in triaging their message and encourages the use of text paging over alphanumeric paging to reduce interruptions in patient care.

Evaluation of Intervention: This intervention was evaluated through data log comparisons and surveys, with analysis showing a reduction in the use of alphanumeric paging and high provider satisfaction with the new communication pathway.

Results: Data showed a reduction in the use of alphanumeric pages and an increase in text paging use overall. There was also a reduction in the number of callbacks required by hospitalists. These results are noted below in Table 2. Thirty of the thirty-five surveys sent to the participating nurses post intervention returned with the response of “highly satisfied.”

Conclusions: This pathway provided a framework for an institutional change on a small scale that could be applied to more units and hospital services throughout the institution.
