Abstract

Ruby Pearlman is a Nursing major from Santa Barbara, CA. Ruby explains that her essay was inspired by her frustration with the way artificial intelligence is often compared to human creativity. “Creating art is a big part of my life, and it’s frustrating to spend hours on something I’m proud of just to hear people’s comments about how they could ‘do the same thing’ in seconds with AI,” she shares. For her, this project was a chance to present a clearer distinction between AI-generated content and art made by a real person. At the time she was writing, Ruby was also in the middle of applying to transfer schools as an Architecture major, which meant she was producing new work for her portfolio while thinking deeply about questions of creativity and originality. (She is now pursuing Architecture at the University of Colorado Denver.) She notes that the use of AI in art and design is a pressing issue in many creative fields, including architecture and illustration, both fields that she hopes to pursue in the future. Writing this essay allowed her to connect her academic work with her artistic passions, and to think critically about how technology is reshaping creative labor. Outside of her studies, Ruby enjoys learning languages and is currently studying Spanish. Over spring break, she traveled to Mexico City through a UMass Boston Honors class on healthcare systems in the U.S. and Mexico, which gave her the chance to expand her cultural and academic perspectives. Ruby hopes to continue combining her interests in art, design, and language as she builds her career.
