Abstract

Jameison Wirta is from Somerset, MA, and is a Psychology major with a Chemistry minor in the Pre-Medical Program. For Jameison, this essay was especially important because it completely transformed the way he thinks about writing. “I used to hate writing,” he explains, “but what I really hated was the cookie-cutter, check-the-box process I was always confined to. Learning to set myself a bit freer in my writing was an absolute blessing, and now I love it.” He hopes to share that same sense of freedom with others through his work. This semester was Jameison’s first time back in a classroom in over a decade, which he describes as “absolutely a culture shock.” Writing this paper, and going through the process that led up to it, changed his perspective entirely. “Honestly, it made me excited to keep writing,” he reflects, “which is something I thought I would be avoiding at all costs before taking this course.” Beyond the classroom, Jameison is an Army veteran of over a decade and a proud father of two children. He explains that his decision to return to school was motivated by them: “I want to show my kids that with enough perseverance, they truly can go and do or become anything they want to.” His ultimate goal is to attend medical school and become a doctor so that he can continue to serve his community after military service. For Jameison, this essay was not only about finding his voice as a writer, but also about taking another step toward the future he envisions for himself and his family.
