Abstract
Although the majority of older adults in Massachusetts lead independent lives free from physical limitations, the likelihood of acquiring some form of disability increases dramatically with age. Among all adult residents of Massachusetts (aged 18 and over), roughly 13% have disabilities. Disability rates among persons 65 to 74 are more than double those of middle-aged adults (age 35 to 64). Among those aged 75 and older, rates double again.
