Plenary Session II – Infrastructure Track: Designing for Older Road Users

Abstract

This session will focus on how streets and highways can be designed to better meet the needs of older road users. Gene will discuss programs and projects underway at FHWA to advance the safety of Older Road Users. This will include discussion of the Older Driver and Pedestrian Special Rule, Handbook for Designing Roadways for the Aging Population, Older Driver and Pedestrian Design Workshop, the North American Conference on Elderly Mobility Noteworthy Practices Guide, and Road Diets. Gene will provide attendees with an in-depth look at the updated Handbook for Designing Roadways for the Aging Population. His presentation will focus on the various sections of the guide and how the material can be used to improve safety for all road users. There will also be a brief discussion with the Assistant State Traffic Engineer on how MassDOT is incorporating the design elements identified in FHWA’ s updated handbook.
